Here’s a list of resources for parents and pregnant women that I’ve encountered through friends, family and on the Internet .
I’ll continuously update it as time goes by.
BOOKS
* Pregnancy for Dummies
If you just want a general overview on pregnancy and labor, this book covers the basics. However, it’s not very detailed so I don’t use it as a reference to check on how my pregnancy is progressing or how the baby is developing.
* What to expect when you’re expecting (4th edition) by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel
I read this book every month as there are detailed chapters describing what happens during your pregnancy and doctor’s visits every month, with short descriptions of the baby’s development each week. I also find the Q&A section at each chapter very informative, especially if the topic touches on exactly what I’m currently feeling.
INTERNET
* BabyCentre
BabyCentre UK (www.babycentre.co.uk) belongs to Johnson & Johnson and is a resource for everything you want to know about conceiving, pregnancy, labor and children. I read this website regularly and you can also subscribe to get a free weekly e-mail about how you’re pregnancy/baby is developing. I visit the UK website just because they use both the metric and the British/US systems when talking about measurements. The website is also available in other languages.
* Baby and Bump
Baby and Bump (www.babyandbump.com) is a UK-based pregnancy forum where you can talk about every topic under the sun related to conceiving, pregnancy, labor and children. Although most of the members are in the UK, there are also many English-speaking members from other countries.
* Swissmom
If you want to practice your Swiss German or high German, Swissmom Forum (www.swissmomforum.ch) is a good resource to chat with other pregnant women and mothers in Switzerland.
* The New Stork Times
The New Stork Times (www.thestork.ch) is a good resource for English-speaking parents and expectant mothers in Switzerland. They also offer courses in English (but mostly in Canton Zurich) related to childbirth, infant care and raising multilingual/multicultural children.
* Think Baby Names
If you’re wondering about possible baby names or looking for meanings of names, Think Baby Names (www.thinkbabynames.com) has thousands of baby names. The website also provides the different language variations of each name.
